Vets Get Scanning

A large issue in the facebook media recently has been the increase in dog thefts. Dogs are one of the easier theft targets; Pedigrees sell for a lot of money and I can only imagine the worth of a fully trained working Cocker Spaniel. The amount of lost dog posters are multiplying in my area. I  don't quite understand the insensitive nature of the people who take these dogs, at least a TV is an immaterial possession, whereas for some people a dog is their life.
A large step forward has been the introduction of compulsary microchipping of all dogs from 2016. However, whilst this is a step forward, there is no point microchipping if the vets don't routinely scan new arrivals in their clinics. In fact, they should be starting now. A Halo scanner is said to be the most efficient form of scanner for microchips bringing up the address and so forth on contact. Bruce Forsyth's vets get scanning page, linked below, is one of the main drivers and I urge people to ask their vet to start scanning new arrivals. It will mean that dogs cannot just get sold after theft, and may also mean that lost dogs that are 'taken in' can be reunited with their rightful owner. Food for thought.
