Equine Disease Control & Isolation

A horse is most resistant to infection and disease when:
  • Immunised.
  • Good nutrition.
  • Minimal stress.
Managing an outbreak:
  1. Make a diagnosis and verify it medically (find the cause).
  2. Define a 'case,' do all sick horses have the same clinical sign and is the same diagnosis verified.
  3. How big is the problem- attack rate.
  4. Describe the outbreak- temporally, spatially and animal characteristics.
  5. Implement disease controls.
Mass treat, quarantine, environmental hygiene and vaccination is possible.
